早年生活

山德斯生于英国約克郡西瑞丁的奥特利[6]，曾经就读于汉普郡的万斯沃斯勋爵学院（英语：Lord Wandsworth College）和中央演講和戲劇學院[7]。他的父亲威廉是一名土壤分析师，母亲布兰达（Brenda）本姓利奇（Leach），是一名保守党议员以及当地戏剧社的领头人[8][9]。

职业生涯

山德斯在出道之初主要在各大电影中演出配角，作品包括《牛津蓝调（英语：Oxford Blues）》、《杀戮战场》等。1984年，山德斯在BBC根据小说《欢乐之盒（英语：The Box of Delights）》改编的同名电视剧中友情客串了一名希腊士兵[10]。1985年，山德斯在瑞士恐怖电影《After Darkness》中与尊·赫上演对手戏，同年又在爱情片《看得见风景的房间》 扮演了主角。随着《看得见风景的房间》以及1986年肯·羅素执导的《魂断仲夏夜》的成功，山德斯退掉了《莫里斯的情人》的演出，开始进军好莱坞美国电影[7]。

山德斯于1989年出演了恐怖片《超速魔侠》的主角，其后又在1993年出演了续集《恶魔之子》。

1991年，山德斯参演了电影《春光奏鸣曲（英语：Impromptu (1991 film)）》和《裸體午餐》，分别饰演李斯特·费伦茨和伊夫·克洛凯（Yves Cloquet）。除此之外，山德斯的电影作品还包括《小魔星》（1990年）、《盒装美人》（1993年）、《吸血鬼传说》（Tale of a Vampire，1992年）、《离开拉斯维加斯》（1995年）等电影的重要角色[7][11]。

山德斯于1984年娶了英国记者及作家萨拉·哈维（Sarah Harvey）为妻，两人于1987年离婚，育有一个儿子[28]。1990年9月22日，经好友約翰·馬克維奇介绍，山德斯娶了美国的剧作家叶夫根尼亚·契考维茨[29][30]，两人育有两个女儿[31]。桑德斯非常注重保护家人的隐私，甚少在采访中谈及妻儿的情况[32]。

自1990年到去世为止，桑德斯一直和家人住在洛杉矶[33]。

山德斯是一名狂热的登山运动爱好者。2023年1月13日，山德斯前往加利福尼亚州圣盖博山脉的圣安东尼奥山徒步旅行，当晚传出失踪消息[34][35]。搜救人员随后开始出动寻找，但由于受到暴雨阻挡而进展不佳。1月18日，山德斯的车子被找到，次日，报道称山德斯的三个孩子已加入搜寻，其中儿子亨利正在一名熟练登山者的陪同下重走山德斯的旅行路线。另外，山德斯的手机Ping定位或因电量耗尽而于1月15日开始消失[36]。

根据推测，山德斯失踪时所走的路线应该是“距离山脚3,900英尺（1,200米）、还差超过4.5英里（7.2公里）到达圣盖博山最高峰”的一条名为“Baldy Bowl”的小路[37]，而根据报道，该区域已被发现有雪崩迹象[38]。

1月23日，一名圣贝纳迪诺县的代表证实，空中搜索仍在继续，但因地面区域处于冰封状态且有雪崩风险，地面搜索能否继续则尚不确定[39]。在山德斯失踪11天后，其家人发表声明对地面搜救队伍表示感谢[40]。

1月25日，据BBC报导，山德斯的兄弟尼克（Nick Sands）表示觉得山德斯已无生还可能，目前正在尝试接受这一事实[41]。4月14日，山德斯的儿子亨利对《泰晤士报》表示，鉴于加利福尼亚州遇上40年来最高降雪潮的情况，他非常理解天气情况对过去三个月的搜救行动的影响，但亦希望搜救人员在天气好转后能继续搜寻[42]。

6月19日，圣贝纳迪诺县警察局发表声明称已于17日派出一个80人组成的搜救队伍前往圣安东尼奥山的偏远区域搜寻。据警察局统计，自1月份山德斯失踪以来，当局已组织过8次搜救任务，总志愿搜救时长逾500小时[43]。

6月23日，山德斯的家人表示仍然将山德斯铭记于心[44]。

6月24日，有登山者于山德斯所在区域发现人类尸体[45]，27日，尸体被认定为有很大可能是山德斯[1][46]。7月24日，山德斯的死因被公布为“不明确”，因为其尸体的情况在处理同类案件时“很常见”，无法得出明确结果[47]。
