On Vancouver Island prospecting for lodes was commenced about1896 in the neighbourhood of Alberni village at the head of AlberniCanal. Gold-bearing quartz float was found by placer miners inChina and Granite creeks, which resulted in the discoveries of bodiesof auriferous quartz on Mineral Hill at the head of China creek aswell as on the mountains near the head of Granite creek. Laterprospecting demonstrated that the zone made up of these rocks was ofcomparatively hmited width, and its length has never been determined.The trend of these rocks is northwesterly; the ore bodies fill fissureslenticular in structure with pay ore in shoots. The gangue is quartz,which at and near the surface is free-milling and carries gold values,but with depth the ore becomes refractory. Most of these mineralclaims are situated from 10 to 15 miles from the eastern shore of thecanal. The lack of transportation facilities has been sufficient reasonfor the closing down of active developement.
